It was a perfect fall day walking in Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. As I walked the boardwalks, a visitor told me there were three bull elk up ahead and to keep an eye out. As I rounded a corner, there they were near the Firehole River. Waiting and watching for a bit, I noticed they were just beginning to shed the velvet on their antlers. This signals the end of the growth of their antlers for this year as they start to scrape off the velvety tissue that's full of blood vessels. Beneath them are the sharp tips that will allow them to battle for breeding rights with the cow elk in their harem. This is a sign that we are on the brink of fall in Yellowstone.
