Each spring, the landscape in Yellowstone holds lots of "red dogs" - a nickname for buffalo calves with a reddish hue to their coat that will darken as they grow. This image came from one of the first days the park was open for the summer season as I slowly - ever so slowly - inched my way through a group of buffalo on the road early in the morning on my way from West Yellowstone to Old Faithful. I came to a full stop as I realized I had separated a cow and calf, and Mom was none too happy. She was on the right side of my car, giving me the evil eye through the window, but instantly ignored me again when I stopped. While waiting for the two to come back together, the calf just gazed at me - for long enough for me to grab the camera and capture the shot.
